City Power fakers on the loose

RANDBURG - City Power gives residents advice on suspicious people who claim to work for City Power.

Numerous complaints from Randburg residents about people who come to their homes claiming to be from City Power, have surfaced.

According to the residents an unmarked vehicle parks by the house for longer than 15 minutes. The vehicle would then proceed to start hooting. Someone would get out of the car waving a clip board stating that they were from City Power and are there to read the meter.

City Power spokesperson Syndney Mphahlele said the department has had a lot of complaints from their customers who state suspicious people come to their homes without any arrangement stating to be from City Power but never have any documentation to prove it.

“City Power has meter reading and meter auditing contractors that read and audit meters on its behalf. The meter reading contractors read meters on a monthly basis whereas auditors audit meters are called when required,” explained Mphahlele.

“Both Meter Reading contractors and Meter Reading Audit contractors wear City Power reflector jacket over their uniform. The reflector jacket has a City Power logo and Meter Reading company logo. The meter reading contractor and meter reading audit contractor carries an identification card that bears his name, surname, ID number and photo,” said Mphahlele.

Mphahlele advised residents to visit the City Power website to view the meter reading schedules so they know when to expect meter readers on their properties. “City Power meter readers are also delivering the hard copy meter reading schedule as they are reading the meters,” he added.

“If customers are not satisfied that the meter reading contractor and meter reading audit contractor are not from City Power they can call our help line. Customers are warned not to open their gates to anyone suspicious that they do not trust. They also have the right to call the police,” warned Mphahlele.
