Modern women balance life and breastfeeding

JOBURG - Breast feeding is a health way of feeding a child

IN A WORLD where women are expected to be mom, wife and worker bee, prioritising breastfeeding has become a challenge for many mothers.

Although, according to South African registered dietitian, Michelle Watson, the balancing act may not always be easy, it is possible.

During World Breastfeeding Week, from 1 to 7 August, Watson, based in Melrose Arch, explained how this year’s theme was all about protecting, promoting and supporting breastfeeding.

She encouraged women to do the best they could whilst considering their unique circumstances, because her opinion is that a breast-fed baby is a healthy baby.

“Breastfeeding offers what many mothers are looking for – a healthy child, a way for [moms] to return to their [pre-pregnancy] bodies, as well as being able to feel bonded with their babies,” said Watson.

She went on to encourage spouses to give support and encouragement to the mothers as this was essential for mothers to gain balance; as well as to lead healthy lifestyles.

According to the World Health Organisation, babies are born to breastfeed. The organisation encourages breastfeeding as it gives the best start to life and encourages a child to thrive rather than just survive.

Breastfeeding is, according to the organisation, an investment in the child’s future.
