Colourful India brought to South Africa
See how India and its culture have been integrated and celebrated in South Africa.
The celebration of India commenced at Brightwater Commons on 16 August. Crowds flocked to the centre to indulge in amazing Indian food and soak up some culture. The India Club is a non-profit organisation formed by the consulate in order to promote the culture from within South Africa. Chairman of India Club Debajit Shome said one of the reasons for the event was, ”Interest in India has been to the extent of Bollywood, we want [South Africa] to experience ‘Colourful India’.”
The cause for celebration expanded past this as it was India’s Independence Day on 15 August in 1947. Consul General Randhir Jaiswal stated, “[this event] brings us together in a meaningful way to bring our culture of colour to this rainbow nation.”
The festival showcased a variety of performances from Kuchipudi and Srujana dancing to a host of singers.
They even had Sahaja yoga which works within the subtle energy found within the human being.
Hoards of people milled around the stalls which were selling truly Indian items like sari’s, incense, as well as offering henna.
Of course, the food was sensational with cuisines such as chana, bryani, spicy chicken, dhal and sweet delights coming from all regions of India.
Head of the consular wing and communications office Alok Pandey suggests, “It’s a wonderful place to represent all the states of India at its best.”
