Vehicle thief caught in five minutes

LINDEN – Bakkie thief apprehended about 1.5km from crime scene.

A suspect believed to have stolen a bakkie in Blairgowrie was arrested in Linden five minutes later.

Several Linden police officers and two Linden Neighbourhood Watch members confirmed the incident took place.

A male suspect stole a white bakkie near the Blairgowrie Primary School in Standard Drive at about 10.30am on 05 September.

Warrant Officer Jaco Pieterse and Constable Zibisi Mikka explained that they happened to be sitting in their vehicle nearby at the time.

The news broke over their radio, that a bakkie was stolen.

The policemen saw the bakkie drove past them.

They quickly gave chase, travelling south and turning left onto 1st Avenue, Linden.

“He skipped a robot and nearly took out another vehicle,” Pieterse recalled.

The officers drove alongside the suspect and pointed a firearm at him.

He promptly pulled over and was arrested in a parking lot about 1.5km from where the theft occurred.

It is believed that two other suspects in a white Isuzu double cab were also involved in the theft, but they evaded the police.

Questions were sent to Linden police spokesperson Carol Mulamu and comment is awaited.
