ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring delivers the following Christmas message to residents:
Are you prepared for your festive season? It’s nearly that time of year where most of us will be taking leave from work, locking up our homes and heading to our nearest holiday destination for a well-deserved break. But are you fully prepared for the worst? Not planning your holiday properly can make a well-deserved rest seem like a nightmare. Here are a few tips that you can use so you can always be prepared for anything!
Motor vehicle
- Always make sure that your vehicle is in a proper working condition. Nothing is worse than breaking down halfway to your destination. Most vehicle service centres offer a free safety check so why not utilise that.
- Always make sure your vehicle has a first aid kit. Minor bumps and bruises always happen on a long trip. A fire extinguisher, bottle of drinking water and torch could also come in handy.
Household
- Remember to switch off your geyser. If you are not using it, why waste electricity?
- Notify your security company that you will be away from your premises. If that cannot be done, ask a friend to check up on your home from time to time.
On the road
- Do not drive if you are fatigued. Stop every two hours or 200km to give yourself a rest.
Destination
- Do a bit of research on the area you are travelling to. Make sure you have emergency contact numbers of nearby hospitals should the worst happen.
- Make sure that you have a basic first aid kit with you at your destination at all times.
General
- Have a list of emergency contact details of family or friends should anyone need to get in contact with them in case of an emergency.
- Give a contact list of the accommodations or nearest place they can reach you in case something happens at home.
