Determination and perseverance pay off
Strydom Park – Shaazia Hammid shares how she excelled in matric
A truly motivated Shaazia Hammid has never been your typical student.
She had always set very high standards for herself.
From as early as Grade 1 she had achieved mostly As.
The 70 trophies and certificates she has received, are proof that she is a motivated person.
A few years ago, the 18-year-old matriculant of Randburg won the Bokamoso award by beating pupils in 15 schools that fall under the Marlboro district.
In matric 2014, she won the dux award for being the overall top student at her school, Eden College.
“I believe that everyone should work hard, persevere and be determined – that leads to success,” said Shaazia.
She achieved distinctions in all seven of her subjects – English, Afrikaans, maths, life orientation, accounting, life sciences and physical sciences.
After her dad passed away, she was raised by her uncles, grandmother, and mother, “I am very thankful for all my family support,”added Shaazia.
When asked whether she had a game plan going into matric she said, “I tried not to make any enemies, since I was a new student starting matric at Eden College,I stayed away from negative influences and did not give into peer pressure, I gave up my break times to study and worked really hard during the year.”
“I know she will do well in whatever she does, Shaazia is very committed. We can be going overseas and she will say no, she has to stay and study,” commented proud grandmother, Rashida Hammid.
Shaazia plans to study actuarial science (her first choice) or charted accounting at either the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) or the University of Johannesburg (UJ).”I aim to be the top actuary and be the best at whatever I am doing in my future,” concluded Shaazia.
