Roots and Shoots toward making a difference

RANDPARK RIDGE – Dr Jane Goodall shares how everyone can make a difference, even if it's a small one.

Dr Jane Goodall of the Jane Goodall Institute gave a talk on 12 February at Randpark Ridge Primary School.

The aim of the talk was to encourage a conscience that fosters respect and compassion for all living things, according to Dr Goodall.

During the talk, she focused on her project ‘Roots and Shoots’, which seeks to promote an understanding of cultures and inspire individuals to become agents of positive change.

Dr Goodall explained that “Roots and Shoots is about choosing a project, getting out there, rolling up your sleeves and doing what you can. It isn’t that young people can’t change the world, they are changing the world every day. Every single one of us makes a difference every single day and you can’t live through the day without making an impact on the world.”

Roots and Shoots National Manager Juliet Price added that,”Tonight we are very excited, we are launching the ‘Tree Batten’ challenge at Randpark Ridge Primary School. The challenge is to grow the Roots and Shoots group movement in South Africa.”

Headmaster of Randpark Ridge Primary School commented that, “We are very excited to take on the challenge; we will aim to instill a new passion in our children for animals, people and the environment.”

Randpark Ridge Primary will be involved with the animals, environment and people campaigns.

The school will then need to find a new group after that which can be a school, club, community centre to pass the ‘Tree Batten’.

Roots and Shoots is the Jane Goodall Institute’s international and humanitarian youth action programme.

The programme is active in more than 135 countries.

In South Africa they have two focus areas – community outreach programmes focusing on people, animals and the environment and group memberships which include pre-school, primary school, high school, university and youth and community centre groups.

Roots and Shoots can be helped by resources, financial donations and volunteering.
