Casa do Sol swimming team completes Midmar
LINDEN – Casa Do Sol School is proud of their swimming team that took part in the Midmar Mile Dam swim.
Linden’s Casa Do Sol School for Special Education’s swimming team recently finished the Midmar Mile with the help of their teachers.
Michael Smith completed his eighth Midmar Mile and his time was 34: 32.
Smith is now able to swim on his own without any help.
“I swim alone so I was a bit nervous. I came first in our swimming group in last year’s Midmar and I intend on going back again next year,” he said.
Justyn Dama completed his fourth Midmar Mile and his time this year was 48:58.
“I have done the Midmar four times now. I enjoy going there because the drive there with my mother and sister is very nice,” said 19-year-old Dama.
Takara di Giandomenico completed his second Midmar Mile and her time this year was 53:00.
“I like it when I swim, my coach and I love the long drive there. The swim is usually very cold but this time it was a bit warm. I don’t mind the cold though because I started swimming as a child,” said 20-year-old Di Giandomenico.
Lauren Bird also completed her fourth Midmar Mile and her time this year was 44.22.
According to Class 6 teacher Lindi van Vuuren, swimming is very important for Casa Do Sol pupils.
“They have all improved in their times when doing the mile. Swimming is good exercise and most of the children, who are not good on land, are amazing in water. We start teaching them when they are little to make sure they are not scared of the water and we try to get them to learn how to be safe in water at all times,” she said.
