Making a change one school at a time
BRYANSTON — Local organisation is on a quest to improve the education system one school at a time.
One School at a Time is on a quest to improve the lives of school children in disadvantaged communities around Johannesburg.
The NGO based in Bryanston is committed to creating an education system that can be an example to the world.
They hold different kinds of projects, workshops and talks aimed toward the development of pupils and the education system.
“We upgrade school facilities and do workshops to improve reading, learning and writing and other essential skills needed to better the education system,” said managing director of the organisation, Bronwyn James.
She believes that a number of pupils in poor communities, who often belong to child-headed households, find it very hard to work towards creating a better future for themselves.
“Because of this, one of our ambitions is to inspire children to reach for the stars. We want them to feel like they can do great things no matter what.”
They recently got Russian Cosmonaut, Gennedy Padalka to record a radio commercial in space, that was beamed down from the International Space Station, onto the desks of pupils at the Forte High School in Soweto.
This inspiring feat is but one of the projects initiated by the organisation, who try to secure sponsorships that will enable them to make an even bigger difference to sub-standard schools across the country.
