Not just a pretty face
SUNDOWNER – Local beauty queens use the clout of their titles to give back.
On 16 June Grade 3 Curro Aurora pupil Claudia Borland and five-year old Sonstraaltjie Preschool student Danika Smith competed in the Miss SA Youth 2015 pageant – in aid of the Dobela Benefit Fund. As it turns out, not all pageants are created equal – some of them are “work titles” which involves community involvement, with a focus on making South Africa a better place for our youth.
Claudia, who has previous pageant experience, placed as first princess in her age group and Danika walked away with the title in hers. Danika will be competing on 27 June in the Miss Africa pageant – not bad for a child who started modelling in February as a way to boost her confidence.
Claudia’s mother, Belinda, elaborates that the advantage of the title is that it does “put the girls in a position to have exposure for their fundraising endeavours.” When one considers the talent of the youth of South Africa that is completely untapped purely due to lack of funds and opportunities, she has a point. It also gives the girls the platform to raise awareness for their own causes. And who says you’re too young to care?
Claudia and Danika are helping by selling stationery packs, teddy bears and blanket sets for the Tjokkies Crèche in Krugersdorp. They are working closely with Dimension TV to whom the donations are made and who will purchase the hampers and hand them over to the crèche, with a broadcast, on 17 July. Both Danika and Claudia will be present for the handover.
Should any members of the public wish to get involved, they are more than welcome to contact Odette Smith at Dimension TV for further info.
