GALLERY: Guide Dog Association for the Blind raises awareness

LONEHILL – Guide dogs play an important role in the lives of blind persons.

The South African Guide Dogs Association for the Blind hosted members of the public at their premises in Lonehill on 13 August.

Participants took part in some of the insightful activities about the challenges blind people face on a daily basis.

Divided groups of two were blindfolded while creating a square using only a rope.

The team building exercise entailed following each other’s voices to form a shape they want.

Romany Alexander has been a volunteer for the past 14 months.

“Being a part of this initiative has been a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” Alexander said.

She is part of the Vodacom Change the World initiative that enables people to work for a non-profit organisation of their choice.

Ane Steytler (23), who is a puppy raising supervisor, described her experience working with the dogs as rewarding, training them from birth and seeing them develop. She also highlighted the importance of raising awareness and funds for the Guide Dogs Association for the Blind.

The association will host the Starry Nights annual ball on 12 September at the spectacular Montecasino ballroom in Fourways.

Popular singer and songwriter Danny K will keep guests entertained and will also be joined by comedian Ndumiso Lindi.
