GALLERY: Lesufi warns pupils against sugar daddies and tenderpreneurs

NEWTOWN – Education MEC says no to sugar daddies.

Gauteng MEC for Education Panyaza Lesufi  told pupils of Cosmo City Secondary School that sugar daddies, tenderpreneurs and child support grants are not the future.

“If you believe sugar daddies and tenders are the future, not under my leadership. I am going to make sure you get this message loud and clear,” said Lesufi.

“As long as I am still the MEC for Education in Gauteng, I don’t want a child, who will qualify, but still earns grants because she or he is unemployed. I want to create a generation of responsible, independent and quality professionals.”

The MEC addressed Grade 8 and 9 pupils of Cosmo City Secondary School who visited Museum Africa in Newtown on 5 September.

Lesufi said pushing education and making learning interesting are his first priorities.

“For us to win the battle of putting every child in a classroom, we need to make it more interesting and enjoyable. That is why each and every class will have a smart board, laptops for teachers and tablets for students,” he said.

Lesufi admitted that the province has many school drop-outs, and those children who see people with tenderpreneurs as their role models.

“We need to promote a culture of learning because we can’t afford to have a generation of illiterates, a generation of youth depending on government’s handouts.”

The school’s life orientation and art teacher James Seroto said the pupils visited Museum Africa after they were invited by the Art Expo.

“We never thought that they would meet the MEC. For us it is a blessing because some got to meet and were addressed by him face-to-face for the first time,” Seroto said.

He added that pupils were also taught more about the ups and downs of the entertainment industry by the top celebrities.

“It is up to them to decide where they want to be in future, including the career paths that they will choose to follow,” concluded Seroto.
