LINDEN – Cancer patients and survivors attend an event at A Few Grey Hairs to learn more about cancer.

A Few Grey Hairs is a wig manufacturing company that provides wigs to cancer patients who are undergoing chemotherapy treatment.

A Few Grey Hairs hosted an event where a number of speakers such as doctors and specialists, educated guests on various issues involving cancer treatment.

The purpose of the event was to offer support, inspiration and healing methods for cancer patients and survivors going through chemotherapy. It was also to help guests understand some of the challenges cancer patients and survivors are faced with.

Nutritionist Cindy Odendaal said that prevention is better than cure. “There are certain foods that cancer cannot survive with. It is important to eat food that gives your body oxygen,” she said.

Estelle, who requested her surname not to be published, is a breast cancer survivor. She said she takes cannabis in a form of an oil to treat cancer. “I started taking the oil since the day I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Cannabis has healthy properties that helps with pain, anxiety and sleeping,” she said.

Since she has been cancer-free she has decided to take the oil for the rest of her life as a preventative measure.

Imasha Umayanthi moved to South Africa three months ago from Sri Lanka. She decided to donate her long hair to someone in need. “Initially I was hesitant to cut my hair but I wanted to donate it to a worthy cause. That is how I discovered A Few Grey Hairs,” she said.

Poala Paoli is a cancer patient who is fighting her second battle with cancer. When she was diagnosed with cervical cancer she was not prepared for what lay ahead.

Paoli said she wasn’t informed initially that she would lose her hair after the first chemotherapy treatment. “I was very sad when I started to lose my hair at the rate I did,” she said.

Umayanthi donated her hair to Paoli for a wig that had symbolic inspirational words and names of significant people stitched on the cap of the wig.
