Ward 104 councillor Mike Wood explained that the painting project was initiated by his committee members. “They decided to clean up this area and in future we will open it once or twice and month,” he said.

He further explained that experts will be invited to describe the types of trees and give lectures about birds in the sanctuary.

According to councillor Wood, the sanctuary would not operate full time due to the safety issue in the Joburg area. “Most open areas in Joburg are often occupied by vagrants, hence we will open this place occasionally,” he said.

He further explained that the initiative was one of a few projects that they were planning in their monthly meeting. “We meet once a month at the Liberty Church and discuss challenges in our ward and how we can tackle them,” he said.

Bronweyn Craig from the Bryanfern Resident’s Association added that the initiative would help their members see where their funds were going. “When we work together with our leaders it makes our lives easier,” she said.
