Premier reshuffles cabinet but only swop the MECs

JOBURG – David Makhura reshuffled his cabinet but only exchanged the MEC’s portfolios.

The Premier of Gauteng Province David Makhura reshuffled his cabinet on 21 October, a move that was vehemently criticised by the opposition party.

The DA had described the decision as a move by the premier to protect African National Congress (ANC) party associates before taking a tough decision on corruption.

The premier announced in the post-Executive Council statement that the MEC for Social Development, Faith Mazibuko and MEC for Sports, Heritage, Arts and Culture, Molebatsi Bopape would swop portfolios immediately.

According to the statement by the DA Gauteng provincial leader John Moodey, since Bopape took the office he had been sparing no effort to clean up supply chain problems and holding officials to account and eventually led to the suspension of the Head of Department, Namhla Siqaza earlier this month.

“MEC Mazibuko has a deplorable track record – the Department of Community Safety is still reeling under the effects of her poor leadership – and the only reason she holds such high office is because of her standing within the ANC,” explained Moodey.

He further explained that his party believes the swop was aimed at removing the threat of corruption allegations and investigations against former sports MEC Lebogang Maile and to spare the ANC further embarrassment as we head into an election year.
