Chris Santana celebrates success in Ward 115
WARD 115 – Chris Santana Ward 115 Councillor examines the wards achievements and issues for the year.
The year began with the flooding of the Klein Jukskei River in early February but repairs to the Platina Road bridge remains problematic as the City of Johannesburg has yet to resolve.
Other related storm water issues have once again been escalated to the Members of the Mayoral Committee in Johannesburg who are responsible for the resolution of these problems and developing policies to address and avoid these kinds of failings.
I have had success in initiating a storm water assessment plan from the City of Johannesburg, and have been assured that JRA will implement the plan. I still await the release of the plan and the City of Johannesburg’s priority status per region and ward.
Residents along the Klein Jukskei River were the most affected and responded by all becoming actively involved in addressing some of the root causes of the consistent blockages against our bridges.
This led to months of ongoing clearing of debris, cutting back of alien evasive trees and showcasing how effective private business, community and city/ municipal owned entities can work together. I would like to thank each and every one who made a difference and got involved.
Illegal dumping is a city-wide crisis.
Many of our streets and other open spaces have become characterised by piles of rubble and rubbish, and widespread littering in general, which has introduced health risks to the people and brought down the reputation of Johannesburg. We need visible, consistent and effective JMPD law enforcement in order to halt the decay of our city. This is a unanimous call from City Councillors to the Members of the Mayoral Committee. Let’s hope we will see an improvement in 2016.
Top of the list for 2016 is the ongoing request to get Council to implement a combined SAPS-JMPD law enforcement unit in line with the joint campaign being driven by Douglasdale SAPS and CPF, JMPD and Fourways Precinct councillors. The unit will focus on traffic and bylaw infringements. Followed by the request and implementation of the storm water assessment plan.
Thank you for your support during 2015. I hope we can achieve a great deal of good together in the coming year. I wish you all safe journeys and happy holidays over the festive season.
P.S. Ward 115 has been affected by the Municipal Demarcation Board and our boundaries have changed significantly, please ensure you are registered to vote within the ward you reside. Bring on 2016 and be the change you want to see in local government elections so that the DA govern and fix this city.
