
A taxi driver who allegedly raped a 26-year-old woman was among the 65 suspects caught during Operation Paseka in Diepsloot over the weekend.
The alleged rape incident took place after the victim had boarded a taxi driven by the 35-year-old suspect on the Old Pretoria Road in Muldersdrift during a night back in January.
It is reported that after a passenger had alighted from the taxi, with only the victim at the mercy of the taxi driver. He drove to a spot near the Lion Park Informal Settlement, where the victim was allegedly raped. After the incident, the woman escaped by throwing herself out of the taxi while it was in motion.
According to Diepsloot SAPS spokesperson, Warrant Officer Daniel Mavimbela, “She noticed the suspect in a tavern at Muldersdrift and informed the police on 2 April. The suspect was detained during the early hours of 3 April.”
The suspect will be charged with rape.
WO Mavimbela explained that a further 64 suspects were arrested for offences like possession of dagga, illegal gambling, possession of ammunition and fraud. During the operation, 22 drivers were fined for violating traffic laws.
Liquor-related offenders were also not spared the rod. Five non-compliant taverns were closed, and over 271 000 ml of beer were seized.
All the arrested suspects are expected to appear in the Randburg Magistrates’ Court soon.
