Taser safety
RANDBURG – As crime happens anywhere and at any time, tasers and pepper spray help us to be more prepared for criminal attacks.
An instance of crime usually happens suddenly as criminals use opportune moments of vulnerability to catch their victims unaware.
What options do residents have to enhance their safety at all times, what weapon do you take with you when responding to an unfamiliar sound in the middle of the night? Myles Davis promotes the use of enhanced safety in the form of tasers and pepper spray. “Residents need to be armed using a weapon that is legal but not as dangerous as a gun. That is why tasers and pepper spray offer a solution as they can fit in the hand are user-friendly while effectively offering protection,” he said. Davis who has been in the taser business in the Randburg area for over a year pointed out that with crime stats up and down, there is always an element of danger everywhere. “Criminals strike when you least expect it and you are at your most vulnerable such as when getting out of the car, walking down the streets, cycling or while at home,” Davis emphasised.
He explained that the sound that tasers made in most situations would scare most criminals away and added that once the criminals were in close range the taser could shoot out enough electricity to subdue the criminal. “The feeling of safety makes one feel more confident knowing that if anything were to happen at least you were able to do something about it,” he added.
Captain Alex Vermaak from the Linden Police Station, explained that the use of tasers and pepper spray are legal and considered minimum force internationally, however, the use of such weapons was to be followed by opening a case. “The taser and pepper spray can be used in terms of the law but only as self-defence otherwise it becomes common assault,” Capt Vermaak said. He admitted that such cases were scarce but added that it was better for residents to meet the unknown behind a door armed with something to use for their safety.
