Building a safe playground in Windsor

WINDSOR – There are big plans in the pipeline for the Knights Avenue park in Windsor.

Broken glass bottles scattered between the grass, make-shift fire pits and damaged playground equipment will soon make way for newly renovated fences, jungle gyms, a soccer field and park benches.

This is Councillor Laurette van Zijl’s dream for the children of Windsor.

“Ever since I saw a recreational area in France a few years ago, I have wanted to implement the idea at the park in Windsor. I feel the children need a safe place to visit and play soccer. At the moment there is no such place,” she said.

The Knights Avenue Park is set to be renovated in the near future. A newly-built palisade fence will be installed and the special-purpose park will be locked at night.

“This is to keep criminal elements out of the park,” Van Zijl explained.

The keys to the park will be held for safekeeping by a trustworthy resident.

A local charity organisation and Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) will also be involved in the renovations.

Jenny Moodley, marketing manager for JCPZ, said the facility’s management department is assisting with the installation.

“Thanks to sponsorships, two pieces of playground equipment will be relocated to Knights Avenue Park from George Lea Park [in Parkmore],” she said.
