Permanent solution to illegal dumping

BORDEAUX – Eskom and BNCF work together to curb illegal dumping.

BORDEAUX – Eskom workers and Bordeaux North Community Forum (BNCF) members planted trees along View Road in Bordeaux to curb illegal dumping, while simultaneously celebrating Arbor Month.

On 23 September the two organisations planted about 10 trees which were sponsored by the National Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

This was an initiative by the electricity supply entity to solve the ongoing problem of illegal dumping while beautifying View Road, adjacent to an Eskom transmission site in Bordeaux.

Eskom already committed itself to install palisade fencing along the road as this would completely bring illegal dumping to a halt.

“This problem was such a thorn in the side of the residents as it was an eyesore on View Road. It gave the suburb a very derelict look,” said BNCF chairperson, Shanaaz Bailey.

She said they had been liaising with Eskom to find strategies which could be implemented to stop trucks from dumping rubble in the open area.

The utility’s environmental manager, Vuyokazi Buckland said, “We have been working together with the community for the past two years to beautify this area.”

Eskom Transmission Central Grid senior manager, Victor Shikoana said the greening initiative and trees would not only beautify the area, it would prevent culprits from continuing with their illegal activities.

Eskom also promised that a commitment to install a camera which would capture the perpetrators was already on the cards.
