Taxi mayhem in Randburg

RANDBURG CBD – Residents believe that the Metro police are failing to address the taxi problems on the roads.

Phillip Van Zyl constantly drives past the Randburg taxi rank during peak hours from Monday to Friday.

His experience while driving on Jan Smuts Avenue from Craighall to Randburg CBD has been a complete nightmare.

Van Zyl has tried for the past six months to get Johannesburg Metro police to solve this nightmare, without any success.

“Every night coming from Craighall to Randburg past the Randburg taxi rank there is chaos because of the taxis that park on the road,” he said.

These taxis often occupy two lanes which leave motorists with only one lane.

“They skip red traffic lights coming out of the taxi rank. They park where they want to and when they want to on the road and the Metro police have never come to remove them or tow the taxis away,” he said.

He alleged that the Metro police drive past these taxis and do not take the appropriate action.

“Sometimes there are roadblocks just after the Shell garage close to Midas. One would think that Metro officers would do something as they can see where the taxis park. Never ever have I seen them doing anything to the taxis,” he said.

He said for the past six months he contacted the 011 256 7806 number for assistance and received empty promises from the Metro police regarding these issues.

Some of the people are spotted on the corner of Bram Fischer Drive and North Avenue drinking alcohol on the side of the road and urinating in the streets.

“The area is a total mess. They have lots of rubbish lying around there which they use at night to make a fire. The entire area is infested with rats and mice. The area stinks and looks like a rubbish dump,” said Van Zyl.

Some of the Metro police officers allegedly pass these taxis without issuing a notice or rebuking the drivers.

Metro police spokesperson Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said they would investigate. “The JMPD will investigate this issue together with Social Services,” he said.
