Douglasdale Police Station opened an inquest docket following the death of a man between the ages of 27 and 30 who died when a fire ravaged shacks in the Kya Sand informal settlement on 5 June.
Police spokesperson, Captain Mpho Kgasoane confirmed that five shacks burnt down during the incident.
“A man was burnt beyond recognition in the informal settlement in the early hours of Monday morning. The cause of the fire is still not known,” she said.
Kgasoane said the police would continue investigating this accident.
“We understand that the drop in temperature means that most of the community will be exposed to cold weather thus forcing them to use heating and lighting appliances to warm themselves,” she said.
Police appeal to residents to refrain from leaving candles and braziers unattended.
“Paraffin stoves should be used in a well-ventilated area and should be placed on a flat surface where they cannot fall and the paraffin must be stored in a safe container.”
