Rotary Club of Randburg welcomes new president

BRYANSTON – Kevin Midgley celebrates his inauguration surrounded by family and fellow Rotarians.

The Rotary Club of Randburg recently celebrated the inauguration of its newest president, Kevin Midgley when the club hosted its members to an induction breakfast at Moyo Zoo Lake.

Midgley had been a member of the club for the past seven years and was only due to become president in 2019. “After the incoming president was relocated to Botswana, everything had to be to reshuffled,” shared Midgley.

Kevin Midgley loves that the Rotary Club is all about being a do-gooder without the need to be praised.

This was a welcome surprise for him as to be eligible for the role, club members had to nominate who they thought would be the best candidate. Thereafter he went through training but you are given the freedom to run the club as you wish. Midgley said, “I am excited but nervous about this new challenge.” He was also thankful for the support he received from the former president, Bronwyn Ward and his (Midgley’s) family.

He decided to join the Rotary Club after his son travelled abroad through the club and years later they suggested he join them. Midgley expressed what makes the club special is they are community do-gooders. “The idea behind the club is to do good for the community. We are not glory hunters, we rather work in the background.” He went on to emphasise they go out there to help people before they help themselves.

District Governor, Jankees Sligcher with his wife Judy who is the Rotary Anne governor were part of the guests who celebrated the inauguration.

The former president, Ward said her year as president was a lot of fun and was a learning curve. “We have done some interesting things in my year.” She said Rotary International is trying to change its reputation as an ‘old man’s club.’ As she stated, they are trying to get more women involved along with more people of colour as well as the younger generation. “So what we are really trying to do is attract younger people of any age and of any race, as we really want to bring some diversity to the club.”

Ward concluded, “A good Rotarian is someone who has a heart for their community and who wants to use whatever skills they have to serve their community in some way.”
