As the festive season approaches, crime in and around shopping centres is expected to increase.

Randburg police recently held a crime awareness campaign to educate local business owners and customers about safety and security. Their goal was to inform these shop owners on how to avoid becoming a victim of crime.

Shop owners can use the following tips:

  • Maintain visibility throughout the store
  • Keep the facility well lit
  • Do not keep a large amount of cash inside the store and change your pattern of banking
  • Remain alert and watchful for suspicious activity
  • Take precautions during the opening and closing of the facility
  • Be aware of your surroundings all the time
  • Make sure all your alarm systems are working
  • Be informed, join your business forums, community policing forums, sector crime forums and be involved in your neighbourhood watch.
