Chris and Marlene Neaves opened their garden to the Ferndale Residents Association (FRA) to raise funds for the Ferndale spruit rehabilitation project.
Over 40 people attended the event on York Avenue with their gardening gear and cake forks at the ready.
In line with mayor Herman Mashaba’s, A Re Sebetseng cleanup initiative, the Ferndale Residents Association has been mobilising efforts to clean up the spruit for the past few months. The association often hosts events like this to generate greater support for their cause, such as their community cleanup event, Spruit Day 2017.
“We are doing an excellent job at the spruit, cleaning it up, taking away pollution and keeping weeds under control,” said Chris.
Pollution at the spruit is the main worry of the residents’ association which only wants to see the best for the area.
“Amazingly, today we have raised over R6 000. Any funds that we have raised here today will go straight to helping the cleanup project,” he said.
Erica de Jager is one of the people who is a driving force behind the project. “We came up with the idea to hold the garden tea party to meet people within Ferndale and spread the information,” she said.
Various experts like the gardening guru Trevyn Reiket were invited to speak about everything from garden tips to environmental sustainability.
De Jager added, “We love hosting events like this as it shows that people really care about the environment and the community of Ferndale,
“We are always welcoming new members and community involvement at the FRA, and we encourage more people to join us.”
