A 30-year-old suspect is expected to appear in the Randburg Magistrates’ Court on charges of attempted robbery of a motor vehicle.
Randburg police spokesperson Captain Makgowanyana Maja stated the attempted robbery happened at the corner Malibongwe Drive and Lyn Street in Strydom Park.
The victim was driving towards the intersection with a window slightly opened when the suspect approached the vehicle with a firearm.
The suspect then demanded the car keys but the victim drove off. The victim stated that his son was driving behind him when the incident happened. As the victim drove off, the victim’s son drove into and bumped the suspect with his car.
The police were immediately called and the suspect was arrested. Maja confirms that the suspect was found in possession of a toy gun.
He applauded the victim’s son for being brave enough to help out his father and the police in catching another criminal.
Randburg police urge the community to assist each other at all times in order to reduce crime in the area. Residents and motorists are urged to report any suspicious behaviour to the police.
With the beginning of the festive season, car theft will be on the rise. Maja advised motorists to park their cars in secure places and remain vigilant while driving.
Using your cellphone will also distract motorists from being aware of their surroundings. He also warned motorists not to leave any valuables in sight as they attract potential criminals.
