UPDATE: IPID takes over investigation of police accident
Update on Kya Sand accident that involved four pedestrians and two police officers.
The Independent Police Investigation Directorate (Ipid) has confirmed they will take over the investigation of the Kya Sand accident.
This comes after two Douglasdale Police Station officers were involved in a fatal accident on Agnes Avenue, killing four pedestrians in Kya Sand near the informal settlement. Ipid spokesperson Moses Dlamini said they will take over the investigation as they were called to the scene to investigate the accident. A case of culpable homicide has been opened.
“It is alleged that the police vehicle lost control and struck two adults, aged 27 and 30 years old; and two children aged five and seven years old respectively. The two occupants of the police vehicle also sustained injuries and were taken to a hospital. The investigation is currently underway,” said Dlamini.
Although the police officers were taken to hospital for treatment, Kya Sand residents, however, were left fuming because the bodies of the two women and two children were left under the bridge for hours.
According to eyewitnesses, the driver of the police vehicle was allegedly driving recklessly before he lost control and crashed into four pedestrians who were walking on the bridge.
“The impact was so severe that their legs were crushed and their bodies flung in different directions. They were killed instantly.”
Ipid investigators have also indicated they will attend the post-mortem to investigate further
