SPCA Randburg outlines key requirements for pet adoptions
From pre-home inspections to vaccination checks, here is what you need to prepare before bringing a new companion home.
SPCA Randburg encourages individuals interested in adopting a new pet to visit the welfare organisation to complete the application process.
Potential adopters should visit the welfare organisation with a copy of their ID, proof of residence such as a utility account or lease, proof of veterinary care and vaccination proof if they already have pets. Individuals who reside in a complex or rent must have written permission to keep the animal.

SPCA Randburg does not adopt animals into homes where current pets are not sterilised. If an owner already has a dog and plans to adopt another, a compatibility test is required, and the owner must bring their pet to meet the prospective new animal.
Adoption fees at the organisation range from R900 for adult cats to R1 000 for adult dogs, and R1 100 for puppies and kittens under 12 months, which cover vaccinations, sterilisation, and deworming.

Application and home inspection process
The adoption process begins by visiting the centre, selecting and reserving an animal, and gathering the required documentation. Once all documents are submitted and a pre-home inspection form is completed, an inspector is assigned to verify the suitability of the home.

If an applicant lives in the jurisdiction of another SPCA branch, that branch conducts the inspection, and a compatibility test is completed if other pets are present. Following approval, the animal is booked for sterilisation. Once this has been done, the organisation will contact the applicant to arrange collection.

Requirements before adopting
SPCA Randburg general manager Kaylie Henderson emphasised that adoption is a commitment for an animal’s life and adopters should consider all lifestyle requirements and costs before adopting.

“We encourage families to consider their lifestyle, available space and the ongoing costs of food and veterinary care before adopting,” said Henderson. “Our adoption process helps us find suitable, lasting homes for the animals in our care. There are so many wonderful animals waiting for a family of their own, and our team is there to help you find a companion who suits your home.”
