ADVERTORIAL: Brothel closes, Phoenix Bar and Restaurant rises

RANDBURG – Great food at affordable prices.

A mouthwatering secret home-made peri-peri sauce that satisfies even the fussiest of eaters, and handmade potato chips fried to perfection – these are the staples that set apart Phoenix Bar and Restaurant’s menu from the rest.

Nestled in the heart of Randburg on 355 Main Avenue, the history of the bar and restaurant makes for some fascinating dinner conversation.

It was in 1997 when first owners André and Cornelia Pretorius opened the bar and restaurant as Hotel Shambaria and Fox and Hound restaurant.

The elderly couple decided to retire after a decade of service and the property was leased out. From there it apparently became one of the brothels in the area.

However, this did not last long, the place was closed down and the hotel forgotten by residents.

That is until businessman Andries Wilke bought the property in early 2016 and aimed to bring some of the shine and lustre back into the bar and restaurant.

He needed to do a bit of damage control as he needed to change the stigma that it’s ‘just another brothel’.

Wilke didn’t mind the challenge. He worked at turning the hotel’s 21 rooms into accommodation rented out mostly by college students.

“I am a firm believer in second chances and because the property was an old hotel, that was very important. That is because it fitted our need for student accommodation. And the restaurant offers the most affordable food – you will struggle to find good food at our prices.”

Under the guidance of Wilke and his team, the Phoenix Bar and Restaurant has transformed itself into the perfect place for a family to enjoy an afternoon or early evening meal.

On offer are kiddies burgers no different in size and quality to adult meals, accompanied by freshly fried chips. And, to celebrate the launch of their new menu, the restaurant also has specials for June and July.

On Tuesday you can order a basket of chicken strips, chicken wings or fish goujons for R80. Wednesdays mean you can order a moreish 850gram eisbein and beer for R99, and on Thursdays, you can buy one burger and get another one free.
