Local entrepreneurs and business owners discuss land expropriation
RANDPARK – Local business owners and entrepreneurs came together to discuss the issue of land expropriation without compensation.
At this month’s Rand Business Forum (RBF) meeting, the topic of land expropriation and specifically the amendment of the Constitution was at the forefront.
Local business owners and entrepreneurs met at Randpark Golf Club for a panel discussion about land expropriation without compensation.
The panel included CEO of Galileo Capital Theo Vorster, professor of management and policy analyst at the University of the Witwatersrand Anthoni van Nieuwkerk and Willie Spies, an attorney with Afriforum as one of his clients, with Freek Robinson leading the panel.
Desiree Faber, marketing manager of the forum said the land expropriation without compensation question is especially salient for younger South Africans who want to know how their business development plans might be affected by any amendment of the Constitution.
“Our young business people and entrepreneurs are our future, not only in Randburg and the greater Johannesburg area, but countrywide.
“They need to inform themselves about any possible changes to the business environment that might be the result of the proposed amendment.”
She stressed the importance of regular networking with other business owners, to get to know them, to share ideas on successes or on how to overcome possible stumbling blocks, be they related to expropriation without compensation or other business concerns.
Vorster focused on how price, term and choice of an investment decision are affected by the amount of uncertainty. Van Nieuwkerk spoke about a workable plan for the effective and responsible redistribution of land, and Spies informed attendees about various approaches to land expropriation.
Beforehand, Winda Austin-Loeve, president of the Small Business Institute shared her insights on the threat of South Africa’s unemployment crisis and how accelerated economic growth is of critical importance to the country’s future and the business community.
