Girl Guides have their sights set on the stars

NORTH RIDING – Young Girl Guides have the chance to learn more about the stars surrounding us thanks to a generous donation.

Girl Guides South Africa celebrated all things astronomical after receiving a kind donation of a telescope at their national headquarters on 6 October.

The excited girls celebrated in the late evening with an event they dubbed a ‘star party’, all lining up to get a view of the stars with the help of older experienced Guides.

The educational gift of the high-quality Scope X telescope was a donation from the Sterren Schitteren Voor Iedereen project.

“We are grateful for this generous donation by Sterren Schitteren Voor Iedereen,” said chief commissioner of Girl Guides South Africa Sizeka Rensburg.

Scope X chairman Chris Stewart who attended the event said South Africa was the fourth country in Africa to receive the telescope saying, “It was the key to unlocking the universe.”

The Rand Astronomy Club was also ‘on-sight’ to help the girls find the stars.

According to Rensburg, the receipt of the donation kicks off the organisation’s programmes to celebrate the International Day of the Girl on 11 October.
