Acacia School holds blood drive
NORTHRIDING – Acacia School hosted a blood drive and learners and staff rolled up their sleeves.
The bright blue sky was the perfect weather for rolled up sleeves and a break from the usual school timetable on the morning of 9 April.
Acacia School in Northriding hosted a blood drive at their high school and the South African National Blood Service was there to facilitate the proceedings. Staff and learners were excited to give blood and a number of them said they were eager to find out their blood type through the exercise.
Eager learners jovially filled out forms to add their name to the1 per cent of the South African population who donates blood. Learner Ofentse Makoatsane wished to donate blood because he was eager to find out his blood group and help with the shortage of blood.
“My sister was in a similar situation when she needed blood so I would like to help,” he said.
Fellow learner Mathew Botha said his grandmother had donated blood and he would also like to do so as well as know his blood group. Allen Mwashita jokingly said he was ‘just here for the snacks’.
Principal Fiona Wood said ‘every bit helps’ when donating blood.
The blood service said a person can donate blood every eight weeks.
