Blazers for hope

LYME PARK – The St Stithians Boys' College prefects auctioned their school blazers and prefect privileges for a week, for charity.

The St Stithians Boys’ College prefects held a fun auction day to raise funds for charity on 14 June.

Each year, the schools’ prefects auction their school blazers and prefect privileges for a week, and the Grade 8s and 9s get a chance to bid on a prefect blazer of their choice.

The school’s Annie Fyfe-Hitchings said, “Not only is the day and week a lot of fun, but the funds raised go towards very worthy causes. The bidding was fierce this year having one of the blazers reaching a record-breaking sale of over R3 000.”

R13 420 was donated to Dignity Dreams, an organisation involved in providing re-useable sanitary pads for underprivileged girls.

Fyfe-Hitchings continued, “The donation will go towards re-useable sanitary pads for the Sparrow School in Auckland Park and Life Choices in Benoni.”

A further R6 100 was donated to Hotel Hope.

Fyfe-Hitchings said, “Hotel Hope is a home that is all about changing lives, which creates and runs several small family-style foster homes for orphaned and abandoned babies. It also advocates for adoption and encourages more South African families to adopt. The donation will go towards vital daily supplies.”

She added that the rest of the funds that were raised, including funds raised from an upcoming civvies day, will go towards the school’s Mandela Day initiatives.
