Accused racist Adam Catzavelos appeared briefly in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on 5 August to face charges of crimen injuria from an allegedly racist video taken almost a year ago.
Catzavelos infamously shared a video of himself on holiday in Greece on 20 August 2018, using the ‘k-word’ to describe how he was enjoying the lack of black people on a European beach.
He appeared in court in the matter of a civil case of crimen injuria brought by the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC), who is appealing for appropriate redress for the claimed violation of human rights.
In court, Magistrate Naren Sewnarain removed himself from the case after SAHRC Gauteng manager Buang Jones made a recusal application in the Randburg Equality Court.
The SAHRC requested that Sewnarain be removed from the matter because of a close relationship with representative of Catzavelos, Lawley Shein.
After admitting to working with Shein almost 10 years ago, Sewnarain later conceded to the court that he had a working relationship with Shein and removed himself from the case.
Jones also noted the fact that Catzavelos was in another country at the time of the accused crime would not make a difference to the case.
Due to the removal of Sewnarain, the matter was postponed to 29 August.
