Pipe problem attended to quickly

RANDPARK – A Randpark resident's pipes burst outside of his property on the morning of 31 July.

Joburg Water speedily came to the rescue of one Randpark resident’s water pipes that burst outside of his property on the morning of 31 July.

Jarqu Ferreira said, “I noticed the pipe outside my house was leaking at around 6am and gallons of water was spilling into my and my neighbour’s property. I was so worried that if this problem was not attended to quickly, there would be serious damage to our properties.”

Ferreira said that the problem was so severe that he had physically lifted the bricks of his driveway to allow the water to drain properly.

He added that he tried to call various City numbers but received no response. He eventually got hold of Joburg Water who attended to the problem at 9am.

The City entity was able to stop the leak within a matter of minutes and replaced the problematic pipe.

Ward 134 councillor Wendy Alexander recently told the Randburg Sun about the problems of burst water pipes in her ward.

Alexander commented on an incident in Karee Street explaining that frequent pipe bursts were due to old cement and asbestos pipes that were under strain during the cold of winter and needed to be replaced with new ones. While Joburg Water was quick to respond, an incident like this would leave resident without water for hours.

The winter cold affects pipes that are old due to ageing infrastructure due to expanding and contracting during temperature fluctuations.

According to Alexander, funding to replace problematic water infrastructure in her ward has been approved.
