Heads up – Acacia Schools Head Prefects surprised by positions

NORTH RIDING – Acacia Schools' newly elected head prefects talk about when they found out they were the newly elected leaders of their high school.


Acacia Schools elected their prefects to round up the 2019 academic year on 26 July. with prefects sworn in for the first time in the history of the school.

The head boy and head girl shared their journey to leadership and explained what these positions mean to them in the last year of their high school careers.

Thulani Kamangwana and Tawana Phiri have been chosen as head boy and head girl respectively. The leaders among leaders recalled the Friday where they received the news that they were chosen.

Head boy Thulani mentioned that he was in assembly and they called called his name. “I was like… ‘What?’ I wasn’t expecting it at all!”

Head girl Tawana received a phone call which informed her of the exciting news. “I was absent that day. Mrs Wood called my parents and then they gave me the phone. I thought I was in trouble and just wondered what I had did, then she told me, ‘you’re our new head girl’ and I was like, ‘Oh!’.”

The two’s personalities complement each other – where Thulani thinks of himself as an introvert who spends time at home and sleeps for fun, Tawana the extrovert, loves being out and about, and has hosted and emceed events in and around Johannesburg. Both of the head prefects mentioned that they did not wish to dive straight into tertiary studies next year, as they both aimed to develop their entrepreneurial endeavours.
