young entrepreneurs learn more about the food industry

FERNDALE – Through their tour, they discovered that recipes are adjusted for various overseas markets, with certain spices added or removed, to take account of cultural differences.

As part of Radley Private School’s process of exposing the next generation of entrepreneurs to different types of businesses and immersing them in a culture of entrepreneurship, a group of young entrepreneurs (learners) recently visited Nando’s Central Kitchen (head office).

The outing was used as an incentive for academic excellence with the group consisting of the top academic achievers from grades 1 to 12.

The visit allowed the young entrepreneurs to gain insight into some of the systems and processes involved in the food industry. They learned how each aspect of the Nando’s business model is carefully thought through and replicated across all their stores across the globe, and what it is that makes Nando’s unique as a brand. They also discovered that recipes are adjusted for various overseas markets, with certain spices added or removed, to take account of cultural differences. They gained an understanding of how the company prepares and packages its chicken, and how the finished products are distributed to all their outlets. The visit also touched on Nando’s approach to customer service and human resources – Nando’s values the diversity of its workforce and even has a special database called #rightname that teaches their staff how to correctly spell and pronounce employee names.

The entrepreneurs were taken on a tour of the facilities which included a visit to the test kitchen where Nando’s tries out new recipes. They also visited the on-site store which sells Nando’s merchandise, the gym and a showroom exhibiting some of their famously provocative and award-winning marketing campaigns. They also paid a visit to the Nando’s radio station which is broadcast across all Nando’s branches. The visit wrapped up with a lavish spread for lunch during which the Radley entrepreneurs were treated to various chicken dishes, salads and more.
