WATCH: Pink trees for cancer awareness

RANDPARK – The Fairway Hotel and Spa added some pink to the streets of Randpark to raise awareness about women's cancer.

It’s that time of the year again for the Fairway Hotel and Spa to add a splash of pink to the streets of Randpark to raise awareness about cancer.

The month of October is devoted worldwide to help raise awareness and gather support for the fight against breast, cervical and ovarian cancer in women.

The crowd of invited guests, including regular guests, corporate clients and local celebrities, made their way to Republic Road to wrap trees in pink material all the way down Klub Street to the gates of the hotel.

Guvon Hotel’s Cherelee Oosthuizen said, “We started this initiative eight years ago in order to support the Pink Trees for Pauline Foundation. She started it to raise funds for cancer research and treatment in support of her mother and grandmother who suffered from cancer.”

The initiative aims to create awareness, unite communities and raise money for those afflicted with cancer in a uniquely inspired way by turning towns pink. It started in the Western Cape, and support for it snowballed from there, with supporters across the country taking part.

Oosthuizen said, “In the month of October you will see pink trees in quite a few areas. Ours started very small at the Fairway Hotel and has grown big with other Guvon Hotels taking part too. Putting up all the pink in our neighbourhood shows that we are more than just a hotel as we have causes that are close to our hearts.”

The crowd broke up into teams of 10 to make the wrapping process more intimate and easier. Attendees then made their way back to enjoy a light brunch, as well as a few drinks supplied by Durbanville Hills, and some fun activities.
