LINDEN – The police are alerting the public to vigilant of street crime during the festive season.


The Linden police are alerting the public to vigilant of street crime during the festive season.

Linden Police Station spokesperson Constable Takalani Matumba said the police issue these tips every year due to incidents of street crimes naturally increasing during this time. “Unfortunately, street crime increases over the festive period, but we as the police are here to ensure that people are safe. Please report crime when it happens and work together with us. Stay vigilant and do not behave recklessly.”

Matumba issued the following safety tips to the community to help avoid falling victim to street crime:

  • Always be aware of your surroundings and try to stay in a group.
  • Never overload yourself with numerous parcels, it easily makes you an easy target.
  • Do not carry a large amount of cash money on you. Rather use a card to swipe when doing your shopping.
  • Never allow anyone to assist you in drawing money from an ATM. Rather, if you require assistance, ask a bank worker to help you and do it inside the bank.
  • Make sure that your wallet, cell phone, and other valuables are out of sight.
  • Familiarise yourself with the area that you are going to, know the where your destination is and take note of closing times.
  • Try to inform others of where you are going and the expected time you will be coming back.
