A total of 56 suspects were arrested in operations and general policing by the Honeydew police since 14 February.
According to Honeydew Police Station spokesperson Captain Balan Muthan, a total of 27 drunken and negligent driving charges were issued.
Muthan noted that the issue of drunken driving is a continuous and growing problem in the Honeydew policing area. “People are simply not adhering to laws put into place to keep them safe. The end of last year was just over a month ago where we heard about the shocking numbers of deaths on our roads thanks to drunken and negligent driving. Yet, individuals continue to behave in the same manner well into the year despite these shocking statistics.
“We, as the Honeydew police, will not stand by and let this kind of behaviour continue. Our zero-tolerance policy started in the festive season against drunken driving will continue.”
Transport minister Fikile Mbalula recently unveiled a new law that will be implemented in June 2020 which will set the legal blood-alcohol limit for drivers to 0 per cent. That means that one drink of 350ml of beer or a single tot of brandy or spirits could put you over the limit. “We encourage all citizens who choose to consume alcohol and have to travel to do so in a safe and careful manner. If you choose to go out and drink, either have a designated driver or arrange for a different type of transportation to and from home,” concluded Muthan.
