Sharonlea Primary School welcomes new leaders
SHARONLEA – The school recently celebrated the inauguration of the new Grade 7 leaders whom they hope will lead by great example within the school and the community at large.
New leaders are ready to make their mark at Sharonlea Primary School and leave behind a legacy that will speak for itself for years to come.
The school recently inaugurated its new group of leaders consisting of a head boy Dumisani Moyao and head girl Oratile Khosa, their deputies and leaders. Jocelyn McCrea, head of the department of the Grade 7s who also oversees the leaders, said to hold this coveted position, learners had to put through a portfolio that had them answer various questions based around why they were best suited for this high ranked position.
McCrea explained that from the offset, peers selected classmates whom they thought should fill the role. Those names were then filtered by teachers as they had more of a keen sense of all the learners. “We did not want it by way of popularity or being known around the school, they were chosen through integrity and academic and sports performance.”
Fellow teacher, Mel Naidoo said the intention was to find future leaders whose reach would go far beyond the school gates, “Some of the portfolio questions put them to task and asked they look further than just making the school better, but how they would help make the community better and look at leadership at a global scale.”
She added that although they know this is just a primary school, they feel this is where it all starts. “This is where they start putting together their goals and intentions for the future and working towards it.”
Naidoo said being a leader is a huge responsibility but it is also a gateway for them to see their potential. For the leaders, she hopes they leave behind a legacy that will be remembered by the school. “As the theme for the year is ‘be smart’ and the school motto is ‘excellence’. I hope the leaders use these two components to motivate their leadership for the year as they design their leadership skills around the motto and theme.”
McCrea hopes these leaders will be the mirror of 2020 and lead by example, have respect for themselves and those around them all while being great role models for their peers.
