Local resident distributes food parcels for Mandela Day

RANDBURG – North Riding resident pays it forward.

Northriding resident Rachael Narothum (33) handed out food parcels to community members in honour of Mandela Day this past weekend.

The high school teacher at Northriding Secondary School and Glow TV Mrs Uniworld SA finalist for this year, began her mission at the start of the nationwide lockdown in March. Since then, she has collected and distributed food parcels to people who are not able to afford these necessities at this time. Narothum handed out food parcels in Northriding, Northlands and at Northview Shopping Centre. She said she especially targeted people at robots who had lost their jobs due to the pandemic.

When asked how she decided which items would be included in the food parcel Narothum replied, “I decided to put things I would enjoy and prefer. So I added canned food that can be prepared anytime. I added Weetbix and box milk, and noodles. In winter we definitely need soup, 5kg maize, jam, peanut butter, sugar, oats and soap.”Narothum was eager to thank all who assisted her in her efforts.”I must say a huge thank you to my family and friends who have been my support structure throughout my journey. Thanks to Pick n Pay Northlands’ store manager Zandile Masila, and Siya and Sannah for always going the extra mile and supporting my drives.

“A massive thanks to my husband Rivash for always helping in the preparation and distribution of food hampers in our community. I couldn’t have done it without him.”
