Randburg Police Station offers thanks for Standard Bank CIB donation
It is very difficult at this moment to become physically involved, but that we are always in need of care packages to help victims when they need it and restore some dignity to their situation.
The Randburg Police’s Social Crime Prevention Unit wished to express their thanks to the members of Standard Bank’s Corporate Investment Banking division for their donation of care packages they collected to help victims of domestic abuse, rape and trauma on 31 July.
Social crime prevention coordinator Sergeant Dipuo Maphanga said that the bank’s CIB legal division approached the police at the beginning of the year to ask how they could best help victims of domestic violence. “We explained to them that it is very difficult at this moment to become physically involved, but that we are always in need of care packages to help victims when they need it and restore some dignity to their situation,” said Maphanga.
She added that the donation will be highly valued by the Victim Support Centre, and shed some light on the process the police follow with their victims.
“As victims come to our station, we assess their situation at the customer service centre first, then transfer them to the trauma centre. There, they are helped with a debriefing of the situation and a case is opened,” she added.
Maphanga said that if a person has been a victim of rape, they have to be taken to a doctor after the case is opened, then they are given a care package in the interim.
“Many victims use their care packages after the doctor’s assessment, especially if they need to take a bath and feel fresh. It’s all in aid of dignity,” continued Maphanga.
She said that in incidents of domestic abuse, the victim often runs away from their abuser to the police station without any form of clothing or toiletries. “After processing, these victims are often taken to a place of safety, where a care pack comes in handy,” she added.
Maphanga wished to thank the Standard Bank Corporate Investment Banking team for their generosity on behalf of the Randburg Police Station Commander Brigadier Michelle Jones.
Maphanga added that the victim support centre is always in need of care packages like this, as well as first-aid kits, and encouraged other businesses and community members to follow this example.Details: Randburg Police Station 011 449 9110.
