Domestic worker forum knits for abused children

Carol Corbett of the Vandia Gardens Residents Association said that as a community project, the forum has women who knit and crochet blankets for handing out to the Randburg police's Victim Support Unit to help destitute, abused, abandoned children.

The Vandia Grove Domestic Workers Forum handed over blankets that they graciously knitted to help children who are victims of social and domestic abuse to the Randburg Police Station on 18 August.

Carol Corbett of the Vandia Gardens Residents Association said that as a community project, the forum has women who knit and crochet blankets for handing out to the Randburg police’s Victim Support Unit to help destitute, abused, abandoned children.

“One of our attendees takes the wool to Surita Parsons who knits most of the squares, then brings them back to be made into blankets. Her daughter very kindly crochets whole blankets. Jan Kennedy organises the wool and has taken on the task of sewing the squares together and fellow resident Bridget Meiring crochets around the edges – a fairly big task done with care and fun,” said Corbett.

The station’s Captain Makgowanyana Maja and social crime prevention coordinator Sergeant Dipuo Maphanga collected the blankets on the day on behalf of the station.

The wool was kindly sponsored by the VGRA committee.

Corbett said that there are between 40 to 50 women who attend. “They socialise for a few minutes before the meeting and after a presentation, the VGRA committee sponsor a cool drink and muffins/biscuits/vetkoek before they go home again,” she said.

She added that if any local Vandia Grove domestic worker is interested in attending these meetings, they are welcome to call Corbett on 082 677 1373.
