EFF’s Malema and Ndlozi appear in Randburg court
FERNDALE – The EFF's Julius Malema and Mbuyiseni Ndlozi appeared in court on 14 September for allegedly assaulting a police officer in 2018.
Julius Malema and Mbuyiseni Ndlozi of the Economic Freedom Fighters appeared in the Randburg Magistrates’ Court on 14 September for allegedly assaulting a police officer in 2018.
The EFF members were accused of allegedly assaulting a police colonel, captured on CCTV cameras, when they tried to enter the burial of the late struggle icon Winnie Madikizela-Mandela on 14 April 2018.
The CCTV footage went viral on social media in 2018. In court arrest warrants that were issued after the pair failed to previously appear in court were scrapped.
Outside the court, Malema briefed the media and accused the court of irresponsibility by proceeding with the case during the Covid-19 pandemic and discussed issues surrounding it.
“In many places in the country, people do not have to appear in court due to the pandemic. Having to appear in court, without having necessarily committing a crime, is putting our lives at risk. It was very irresponsible to ask us to appear during this time,” said Malema.
After a very brief appearance in the court, the pair’s hearing for a trial date was postponed to 13 October.
