Seshweshwe prints for Randburg pets

Carmen Bekker of Benlu Collars said the company stood for more than just dogs. “When you buy a collar, you not only spoil your dog but you help an array of individuals,” she added.

A company is making dog collars with a difference and upskilling local women at the same time.

Benlu Collars started an initiative, The Spirit of Seshweshwe, and make Seshweshwe print dog collars as well as a matching mask for the dog owner. SeShweshwe is a printed dyed cotton fabric widely used for traditional southern African clothing.

Carmen Bekker of Benlu Collars said the company stood for more than just dogs. “When you buy a collar, you not only spoil your dog but you help an array of individuals,” she added.

According to Bekker, there are many women who have creative souls. “Our main seamstress has been able to creatively design something original and beautiful.” Bekker said the pride in the seamstress’s work allowed her to sew with new found confidence while the other staff member was learning how different fabrics worked together and how to make something using Shweshwe print cloths. “The empowerment comes more from self expression and knowledge that can be carried to other aspects of life.”

Bekker also sits down with the seamstresses and guides new hands into the craft. So far this Spirit of Seshweshwe has helped two women change their lives by giving them a new skill to take with them for the rest of their lives. Though the company is still small, they hope to have many more join their family.

Moving foward, Benlu Collars wants to have many hands learning a trade and a new skill.
