A water pipe has been leaking on Johnson Road in Ruiterhof for over a year, much to the worry of nearby residents.
According to concerned resident Zelda Hertz, the leak was first reported in August 2019.
“Johannesburg Water vehicles appeared in November 2019 in an attempt to sort the issue out, and when I discussed it with the workers, they told me that the roots from the trees were an issue and more equipment was needed. They never returned,” said Hertz.
Since then, the neighbouring residents have reported the issue with the city entity numerous times.
“They have come back a few times, but the problem persists,” continued Hertz.
What is happening now is that the water is being used by displaced persons who frequent the nearby park and is used for ablutions.
“This water is stagnated, and anyone using it is putting themselves at risk of contamination. I hope this issue can be sorted out soon. Every day, we need to hear about the Vaal Dam’s levels being extremely low, yet nobody is interested in fixing a water leak that has been outstanding for more than a year,” concluded Hertz.
The Randburg Sun has contacted Johannesburg Water and is awaiting their response.
