Mintek helps protect its adopted school

FERNDALE – National mineral research organisation, Mintek recently visited its adopted school, Cosmo City Secondary School to hand over sanitisers and Covid-19 personal protective equipment as part of its Community Engagement Programme.

The items included surface and hand gel sanitisers, and sanitiser dispensing stands manufactured by Mintek as part of its repurposed activities for Covid-19 response. In addition to sanitisers, face shields to protect teachers in the classroom, and Covid-19 prevention posters to remind learners of prevention guidelines were donated.

With a capacity of 1 935 learners, the hand over to the school was a commitment by the company to enable a safe and better environment for teaching and learning and to reduce the spread of coronavirus at the school.

Speaking at the handover event, the company’s CEO Dr Molefi Motuku said Mintek had responded to the national call of the government to curb the spread of Covid-19 by building a dedicated manufacturing facility capable of producing up to 2 000 litres of sanitiser per day.

“The sanitisers we are giving to the school were specially formulated and manufactured at Mintek by its scientists according to the best formulations endorsed by the World Health Organisation,” he added.

Motuku also spoke on the role Mintek played in the development of science engineering and technology, “This is a partnership we believe is important. As a science council involved in the business of research, we can contribute to the development of learners who are pursuing careers in science and technology.”

He reminded learners that the country was still in alert Level 1 lockdown and Covid -19 was still here as shown by recent statistics. He encouraged learners to maintain social distance and wash their hands regularly.

Cosmo City Secondary principal Eddy Maotwe said the partnership with Mintek would inspire learners to study further to become future scientists and engineers which South Africa needed.
