Douglasdale police recently hosted an awareness event at Cosmo City Mall.
The police service has targeted different malls to help prepare citizens for the festive season which normally sees a spike in reported crimes.
The police service had the following tips for community members while in a vehicle:
- Do not reach for your purse or valuables if forced from a car – leave everything behind
- Remember that your life is more valuable than your possessions
- Do not resist when being taken from your vehicle, especially if the thief has a weapon
- Give up your vehicle without asking questions and move away
- A lift club limits the risk of becoming a victim – always ride with a passenger if possible
- Do not give strangers a lift under any circumstances
- Consider a gear lock as an affordable and effective anti-theft device
- If possible, put up a mirror against the front wall of your home garage to see if someone has followed you inside
- Do not open your garage doors before your gates are closed.
