Oil spills on Jukskei Park road

JUKSKEI PARK – A large amount of hydraulic oil was spilt on Sneeublom Street on 5 January.

Jukskei Park residents are concerned about a large amount of hydraulic oil that was spilt on Sneeublom Street that has yet to be cleaned up.

Concerned resident Peter Ross said he was working in his home office when he heard a municipal refuse removal truck lingering outside his property making a strange noise on 5 January.
“I went outside to check what the commotion was, and I saw the truck spilling litres of oil from its hydraulic bin lifting mechanism. It was obviously a malfunction,” he said.

Ross added that the refuse removal workers struggled to do anything to stop the leak, leaving many litres of oil to spill on the road.
“They left their engine running for around 20 minutes while the leak was occurring and I don’t see why they could not have turned their engine off.”

As the road was now slippery on a dangerous bend, and the oil was running into stormwater drains, Ross speedily responded by purchasing cat litter to spread on the road to help absorb the oil.
“There were pools of hydraulic oil, and the oil spread at an alarming rate on the road. There has not been enough rain to wash anything away yet. As people love to speed around this bend, I really hope this problem can be attended to.”

The Randburg Sun has contacted Pikitup to ascertain whether or not it was one of their vehicles or an outsourced refuse removal company that was responsible for the spill and awaits their response.
